ABSTRACT
Scholars’ preoccupation with the teaching and learning of English language among other languages in this part of the world is founded as it is the language of instruction in schools as well as the lingua franca in many African nations, Nigeria included. Given that students and their teachers do not exist in isolations of the society influencing students' performance in English language as a subject in the secondary school. The focus of this study borders on societal factors and its impact on students’ performance in English subject. The study adopted survey design using simple percentage frequencies and tables data was analyzed using Chi-Square statistical package for social science. Findings of the study students use English language improves the society and the society determines language choice in other domains apart from that of formal learning in schools.
